Sonia Gandhi slams BJP of tarnishing Nehru's legacy, BJP hits back

In a fiery speech Sonia Gandhi, the veteran Congress leader and chairperson of the Party, unleashes a sharp critique against what she sees as a calculated assault on India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Launching the Nehru Centre India at Jawahar Bhawan, Sonia accused the ruling BJP-led establishment of running a deliberate "project to vilify" Nehru, aiming to tarnish his towering role in the freedom struggle and the nation's early years. She called it a brazen bid to rewrite history, demolish his legacy, and erode the very foundations of India's social, political, and economic fabric—efforts she branded "totally unacceptable." Pointing fingers at an ideology she said had no hand in the independence movement or Constitution-making, Sonia even linked it to the toxic atmosphere that led to Mahatma Gandhi's assassination. Yet she stood firm: Nehru remains a shining light for millions, open to fair critique but not this vicious divorce from his era's truths.

The BJP didn't take the punches lying down, hitting back with a mix of defense and a cheeky personal dig that lit up across political spheres. As per reports, BJP says that the Congress that's long downplayed Nehru's real contributions—covering up blunders like major scams and the humiliating 1962 Sino-India war defeat. "Human beings make mistakes," Vadakkan quipped, urging an honest look at history rather than what he called Congress's habit of "crying wolf." A sly jab at the Gandhi family's name: If Sonia truly reveres Nehru, why not add his surname to theirs instead of sticking with Gandhi? "They must practice what they preach and add the Nehru surname to the family line," hinting at a deeper "problem" if they cling to the Gandhi tag over Nehru's, claims BJP.

This clash isn't just family feud fodder—it's a snapshot of India's polarized political theater, where icons like Nehru become battlegrounds for today's power plays. As Sonia rallied supporters to defend the Nehruvian ideals of unity and progress, the BJP's retort underscored their push for a "new narrative" free from what they view as Congress's rose-tinted past. With elections on the horizon, expect more such salvos, reminding us that in politics, history is never truly buried—it's reloaded and refired.
